A New Home for Dielle

Read how a group of Chicago-based businessmen helped change the lives of a father and daughter in Haiti.

Dielle (pictured) goes to our Hesed Children’s Club in Southern Haiti. When she was a toddler, her mother died. Since then, her father, Tisay (also pictured), has provided for her alone. Tisay works as a farmer and baker. He earns little. But he’s always managed to make it by—that is, until two years ago.

Hurricane Matthew destroyed Tisay and Dielle’s shack. And with it, the flour that Tisay had purchased on a loan. They had no shelter, and Tisay had no means to feed his daughter. The storm had taken his crops too. To find work, he would have to leave the area. Dielle couldn’t go with him.

Our international partners in Haiti offered hope. They took Dielle in. For three months, they fed, clothed, and cared for her. And during that time, a group of Chicago-based businessmen partnered with us to build Dielle and her father a new, sturdier home.

When Tisay returned, his Green Door home was already under construction. He took one look at it and burst into tears.

Later, he shared this with us:

“I don’t know why you have decided to bless us, but I am so grateful. I can’t believe it! You’ve already changed Dielle’s health and future through HCC. And now, this! All my fears are gone. With this home, Dielle has everything she needs. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the generous people who did this for us. Kindness and love like yours give me hope. I hope that we, as people from different cultures, can always have this unity. That is how we will progress.”

Our Green Door home sponsors help change the lives of children and families for good. It is our privilege to be a part of it.
