Mudpath Ministries

This project takes it’s name from the damp alleyways of the Nutan-Hut and Goragacha areas of the city, both only a stone’s throw away from Kolkata proper.

Our partner at this project is Smriti Maity. For ten years she conducted a ministry among the sex trade workers of the Sonigattchi district. Now she has turned her attention to children living in these mud paths.

Smriti offers tutoring for the village children as well as a children’s Bible club. After a year, the program now has 100 children attending. The curriculum includes teaching English, singing songs, arts and crafts and sharing stories from the Bible. Sewing classes are also a part of Mudpath Ministries. A professional seamstress comes twice weekly to teach young women to sew and learn a trade.

Smriti writes of her work:

“I minister here in Kolkata to children who are in great need. I chose their villages because there was no Christian witness in them. My first step was to take prayer walks among the homes and make friends. Where I was allowed inside, I prayed for the sick and invited the children to come for a children’s club. I run my ministry according to two “Be’s.” Be Christ centered. Be child centered. I will teach our children a new way, a clean path and a new King. I build them for the future they must face in this great city.”
