My Story
I had worked at Quaker Oats for 33 years and heard God telling me it was time to move on because my ministry there was done. I thought, How can this be? I love my job! But I have learned over the years that listening to God is always the better route to take.
After leaving Quaker Oats I worked part-time at Curves as a Fitness coach and as the Worship Coordinator for Maranatha Bible Church where I have been a member for over 25 years. I served on their missions committee and gained an awareness of missionaries and their wonderful work.
One evening a missionary came to speak at our church. At the end of his presentation he challenged all who were willing to sign a commitment card stating that: I will go wherever, whenever and do whatever God asks me to do. My thought was, Okay God, I want to do this for you because I know that your plans are better than mine.
It wasn’t long after I applied for my passport to spend 24 days in Mozambique, Africa. The organization I went with was CRI. This was the perfect fit for me as I had known Dr. Alan and Melody for years and trusted their work.
As soon as I stepped off the plane in Mozambique I knew I would be back. It was at that moment God spoke to me and I knew I would be walking the sandy soil of Mozambique for years to come. There were times I would question this calling but God has reassured me these are the people I should be working with. I have returned every year since.
My work there has had many facets and today I am serving as the Field Host working with teams. When teams are not in country, I focus on building and encouraging the young women of the church I attend, called Centro Emissor. It is at this little church in the bush where I find the most fulfilled part of African culture. These people have become my family.
My heart and desire is to serve the poorest of the poor. My prayer is that God will continue to bless and multiply my ministry of serving the poor in Mozambique.
